From experimental small-batch brews to trendy beer gardens and fun taproom events - beer lovers will find plenty to enjoy in San Jose. Make plans to raise a glass at some of our favorite taprooms, beer gardens, and breweries in San Jose, CA.

Tour the Original San Jose Brewery at Gordon Biersch Brewing Company
Kicking off the craft beer trend in the Silicon Valley all the way back in 1988, the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company still creates some of the region's best German-style ales and lagers. Today, it's the largest brewery in the entire San Francisco Bay Area, a 24/7 operation that pumps out over 3 million gallons of beer every year. Each batch is made with authentic German-style recipes (with the help of modern machinery) and old world ingredients like two-row malted barley, Hallertauer hops, and German yeast from Weihenstephan. Tours of the brewery (located in San Jose's Japantown) are available by appointment on Monday through Wednesday.

Uproar Brewing Company in Downtown San Jose's SoFa District
This inviting taproom, brewery, and gastropub is a popular stop for a leisurely brunch on the weekends with flights of beer and plenty of new friends. It's also open for lunch and dinner, and the menu makes it easy to pair your meal with the right beer thanks to an innovative pairing guide for each type of brew: Golden Beer, Middle Ground, Dark Beer, Sour, or Hoppy. Munchies include Korean-style ribs, fried pickles, shrimp fettuccine, and a variety of big burgers (plus pizza in the evening). Popular beers include the Sofa King Good IPA, Sup Mang mango sour, and Touch of Zin rustic saison.

Hang out at Hapa's Brewing Company: Dogs, Kids & Games
Opened in early 2018, this craft brewery and taproom has already been noticed for its IPAs and laid-back atmosphere. You'll find a big outdoor patio plus indoor seating too in the airy space, along with games and light snacks. You can also bring your own food, or hit up the food truck - one is usually parked outside. IPAs aren't the only trick that this brewery does well, try the Cannery Kolsch for a delicate spice and fruity deliciousness. Dogs and kids are welcome!

Strike Brewing Co. & Warehouse Taproom: Food Trucks & Trivia Nights
From seasonal ales to experimental brews and house regulars, this "hidden gem" features a super cool location on the industrial side of San Jose in one of the back warehouses off 10th street (just look for the signs). It's a local favorite with a vibed-out taproom, baseball-inspired everything, and some very strong beers with up to 11% ABV. You'll find food trucks on the weekends for noshing plus fun trivia game nights on Sunday. It's dog-friendly and also kid-friendly, a convivial hangout for all. Try the Bleacher Seats pale lager, Extra Innings Dortmunder lager, and Babe Brut IPA.

Clandestine Brewing: Friendly, Community Vibe & Killer Suds
Located in the Fairgrounds neighborhood of San Jose, this indoor/outdoor brewery and taproom specializes in small-batch brews. It's a dog-friendly space that's BYOF (bring your own food), although you'll sometimes find a food truck or two on-site as well. Vegans, rejoice - all the beers here are clearly marked whenever lactose is used, so you can drink freely. There are plenty of games to play while you drink, plus free Wi-Fi and a special deal: 6 tasters for $12. Try the Dwarf Galaxy Milk Stout or the Tripel Agent Belgian tripel.

Ludwig's German Table Keeps It Classic: Grab a Seat & Lift a Glass
Kick back in a traditional German beer garden setting with pints of German brews and community picnic tables. Enjoy tasty German pretzels, sausages, cheese, and other specialties in a convivial, lighthearted atmosphere. There's also an indoor seating area, but all the fun is outside, under the big shade umbrellas. Grab a seat on the picnic table benches by a friend or a stranger - you'll be friends before long! Order your beer by the half-liter, liter, or two liter - a giant pour that's served in a boot-shaped glass.
